Unit 5: Molecular Compounds

This unit deals with molecules, or compounds that are formed from covalent bonds.  It also includes some information about polyatomic ions, as they are just covalently bound groups of atoms carrying a charge.  Specifically, students are expected to be able to do the following things: (1a) describe how electrons are shared to form covalent bonds, (1b) write names and formulas for molecules, (1c) draw Lewis structures to show molecular structure, (2) use VSEPR theory to predict the true 3-D shapes of molecules, (3a) compare and contrast various intermolcular forces, (3b) determine the dominant intermolecular forces a molecule has based on structure, (3c) explain molecular properties arising from shape and dominant intermolecualr forces.
